NAIROBI, Kenya – A police officer based at Nairobi’s Central Police Station has been arrested and is expected to face murder charges in connection with the killing of Albert Ojwang.
Police Constable James Mukhwana (Service No. 260950) was taken into custody on Wednesday by officers from the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) and the Internal Affairs Unit (IAU), according to an official memo from the Kenya Police Service.
He is currently being held at the Capitol Hill Police Station.
The officer is set to be charged with murder, contrary to Section 203 as read with Section 204 of the Penal Code.
The memo, circulated internally to multiple law enforcement agencies, confirmed that investigations into Ojwang’s death are being handled by IPOA and the IAU.
The arrest marks the latest in a series of actions by IPOA aimed at holding police officers accountable for alleged abuses and extrajudicial killings.
The authority, established under the IPOA Act of 2011, has the mandate to investigate deaths and serious injuries arising from police action.
Mukhwana’s arrest adds to growing scrutiny of police conduct, particularly in Nairobi, where several officers have been investigated in recent months over the use of excessive force.
The case is expected to proceed to court once IPOA and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions finalize the murder charge.
