NAIROBI, Kenya – The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched an investigation into police shootings in Majengo, Shauri Moyo, that resulted in two deaths and serious injuries to three others.
The incident, which has sparked public outrage and violent protests, involved officers from Shauri Moyo Police Station.
According to IPOA, the first shooting occurred on the night of March 4, 2025, near Majengo Social Hall, when police attempted to arrest a young man.
The attempted arrest reportedly attracted a crowd, escalating into chaos.
During the confrontation, officers shot and seriously injured a youth, believed to be between 17 and 20 years old.
He later succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment at Kenyatta National Hospital.
News of his death triggered protests in Majengo the following day, March 5, with demonstrators clashing with police.
The protests led to further injuries among civilians and law enforcement officers, as well as significant property damage, including government buildings and vehicles.
IPOA has deployed its forensic and rapid response team, alongside public order monitoring specialists, to establish the circumstances surrounding the shootings and assess how police handled the demonstrations.
The oversight body has already recorded key witness statements and attended a postmortem examination of one of the victims. A second postmortem is scheduled for March 6.
While expressing condolences to the victims’ families, IPOA urged the public to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their own hands.
In a separate development, the Authority has also dispatched a team to monitor police conduct in Kakuma, where ongoing demonstrations at the refugee camp have raised concerns over law enforcement practices.
IPOA has assured the public that its investigations will be conducted independently, impartially, and fairly.
