NAIROBI, Kenya — American influencer iShowSpeed, the viral YouTube livestreamer currently visiting Kenya as part of his “Speed Does Africa” tour, added another high-profile stop to his itinerary on Sunday with a visit to the Mukuru Affordable Housing Project, one of the country’s flagship urban development initiatives.
The Mukuru Affordable Housing Project — also referred to as the **Mukuru Boma Yangu Estate, has been a central part of the government’s strategy to replace informal settlements with modern, serviced homes.
So far, more than 4,500 new homeowners have received keys to units completed at the site, with President William Ruto presiding over the handovers in December 2025.
In a video shared by the Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) and widely circulated online, iShowSpeed was seen exploring the development and receiving a warm welcome from residents, youth and project personnel.
The KTB had earlier confirmed his arrival in Kenya, urging locals to engage him and recommend cultural and development sites for his itinerary.
Highlighting Urban Renewal and Affordable Housing
The Mukuru project is part of the government’s broader Affordable Housing Programme, a key pillar of President Ruto’s economic strategy under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).
The development aims to deliver tens of thousands of housing units in Nairobi and other urban centres, addressing overcrowding and poor living conditions in informal settlements while linking housing with essential services like security, healthcare and education.
At the handover last year, Ruto described the project as a milestone in urban regeneration, saying it was “about restoring dignity” to residents who had previously lived in squalid and unsafe environments.
Alongside the housing units, the estate includes infrastructure such as a police station, fire station and hospital to support community wellbeing.
