SIAYA, Kenya – Siaya Governor James Orengo has paid a glowing tribute to former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, describing him as a tireless champion of peace, democracy, and national unity.
Speaking during Raila’s funeral service at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST) in Bondo on Sunday, Orengo said the late ODM leader devoted his life to reconciling Kenyans and fostering stability across political divides.
“He loved peace and unity. If he could bring President William Ruto and former President Uhuru Kenyatta together, that alone would be enough testimony,” Orengo said, referring to Raila’s central role in Kenya’s peace and reconciliation efforts.
The governor criticised those who continued to vilify Raila despite his sacrifices for democracy and justice, saying his contribution to Kenya’s political transformation could never be erased.
Orengo also urged President Ruto to honour the country’s political pluralism and safeguard the multiparty system that Kenyans fought hard to establish.
“I appeal to the President to fulfil the ten-point broad-based agenda in honour of Raila. Do not destroy political parties that Kenyans struggled to establish,” he said.
He cautioned leaders against returning the country to tribal politics, warning that divisive rhetoric risked undoing decades of democratic progress.
“Those promoting divisive politics, woe unto you,” Orengo warned.
Describing Raila as an “irreplaceable statesman,” Orengo said the opposition leader’s ideals and vision would continue to guide Kenya’s political journey for generations.
“No one can fit into Raila’s shoes. His legacy speaks for itself,” he said.
The funeral service brought together political leaders, dignitaries, and supporters who hailed Raila’s lifelong struggle for a just and united Kenya.
