Kalonzo Musyoka Calls for Probe into Death of Cyrus Jirongo as Leaders Visit Family

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya- Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has called for a thorough, transparent and independent investigation into the death of former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo, saying there are serious and unanswered questions surrounding the circumstances of the fatal road accident.

In a statement issued after visiting the late politician’s Nairobi home on Sunday, Musyoka said accountability was essential to public trust and the rule of law, and that nothing should be concealed.

“This is not optional. His family deserves the truth and Kenyans deserve closure,” he said.

Musyoka was accompanied by a cross-section of political leaders, including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa, Speaker Emeritus JB Muturi, Senators Cleo Malala and Gloria Orwoba, as well as Wafula Wamunyinyi, Philip Kisia, Omino Magara, TG Gachoka and Ben Momanyi.

The leaders paid their respects to the family of Jirongo, who died in a road accident on December 13, 2025.

He is set to be laid to rest on December 30.

Describing the late politician as a courageous and principled public servant, Musyoka said Jirongo — popularly known as “CJ” — was warm, outspoken and deeply committed to the idea of national dialogue.

“He believed in this country and in the power of dialogue to resolve even our hardest political questions,” he said.

Musyoka recalled travelling with Jirongo across the country under the One Kenya Alliance and later within the Azimio la Umoja–One Kenya Coalition, noting that they shared a belief in consensus-building and peaceful political competition.

“Our shared conviction was simple: that Kenya’s democracy is strengthened through consensus, national dialogue and the peaceful competition of ideas,” he said, adding that Jirongo stood firmly for these values.

The Wiper leader also shared a personal reflection, saying he had come across a photograph taken ahead of the 2022 General Election at his Kithimani farm, where Jirongo was pictured alongside Martha Karua, George Wainaina and Moses Kuria.

“The image reminded me of CJ as he was — thoughtful, animated and fully present in the moment,” he said.

However, Musyoka said that in the days following Mr Jirongo’s death, concerns had emerged that could not be ignored.

“These concerns are legitimate and must be addressed openly,” he said, adding that Jirongo’s widows — Ann Kanini, Christine Nyokabi and Ann Lanoi — deserved clear answers.

As preparations for the burial continue, Musyoka urged relevant authorities to ensure that no stone is left unturned in establishing the full circumstances of the accident.

“Nothing should be concealed and nothing should be ignored,” he said.

Mr Jirongo, a businessman and influential political figure, played a prominent role in Kenya’s political landscape over several decades.

“Rest well, my dear brother CJ,” Musyoka said, extending condolences to the family and calling on Kenyans to stand with them during the period of mourning.

Police have confirmed that former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo died on the spot after his vehicle was involved in a head-on collision with a public service bus along the Nakuru–Nairobi Highway in the Karai area of Naivasha on the morning of December 13, 2025.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), preliminary investigations show the Mercedes-Benz he was driving collided with a Climax Company Ltd bus carrying passengers shortly before 3 a.m., and officers have launched a formal inquiry into the circumstances of the crash.

CorrigendumWe wish to clarify to the public that the registration number of the vehicle involved in the accident that claimed the life of Hon. Cyrus Jirongo is KCZ 350C, and not KCZ 305U as earlier communicated. We sincerely regret this typo and any inconvenience or confusion

Investigators have secured CCTV footage from a nearby petrol station that appears to show Jirongo’s final movements just before the collision, and police say forensic teams are analysing key evidence from the scene.

DCI detectives have also re-summoned the bus driver for further questioning as part of efforts to reconstruct the sequence of events leading to the accident.

In addition to the crash site work, police plan to record statements from people who interacted with Jirongo earlier that night, including those at a meeting in Nairobi before he travelled.

Officers noted that several passengers on the bus were injured and taken to hospital for treatment, and that the probe remains active as authorities continue to gather information.
