NAIROBI, Kenya- Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma has sustained his attacks on Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna, accusing him of undermining the party’s official stance on its cooperation with President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
Kaluma’s remarks come in the wake of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on March 7, 2025, between ODM and UDA.
Both President Ruto and ODM party leader Raila Odinga said the agreement aims to address national challenges such as youth unemployment, corruption, and to promote inclusivity in governance .
Despite the MoU, Sifuna has constantly expressed reservations about the party’s involvement in the government, leading Kaluma to question his loyalty.
In a statement on his X account, Kaluma emphasized that Sifuna, as the party’s Secretary-General, should uphold and communicate the party’s resolved positions.
He further criticized Sifuna for allegedly attacking fellow ODM leaders serving in government roles, stating, “You either shape up or ship out.”
My brother Sifuna must know we made him Secretary of @TheODMparty to speak on resolved party positions such us the Memorandum of Understanding between @UDAPartyKe and @TheODMparty which lays the foundation for the Broad Based Government. You can’t support the MoU and attack the
ODM leader Raila Odinga has clarified that the MoU is not a political coalition but a framework for cooperation to address pressing national issues .
He emphasized the importance of unity and collective action in tackling the country’s challenges, urging leaders to move beyond political grandstanding.
The internal disagreements within ODM highlight the complexities of political alliances and the challenges parties face in balancing cooperation with the government while maintaining their distinct identities.
ODM has since ‘donated’ several of its high ranking members to serve in Ruto’s Cabinet- blurring its role as an opposition party.
Sifuna has been categorical that the party is not in government, and at some point said “the broad-based government doesn’t exist.”
He recently termed it a monster.
