KCSE 2025 Results Released: How to Check via SMS and KNEC Portal, Symbols Explained

Date:

ELDORET, Kenya — Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba on Thursday released the 2025 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination results, marking a major milestone for nearly one million candidates who sat the national tests last year.

The results were unveiled at Chebisas High School in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, during a ceremony attended by education officials and stakeholders.

According to the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC), a total of 996,078 candidates from 10,755 examination centres across the country sat the 2025 KCSE examinations.

KNEC confirmed that the results are now available through official digital and physical channels.

How to Check 2025 KCSE Results

Candidates can access their results using the following verified methods:

SMS Method
Candidates can obtain their results by sending their KCSE index number to 20076.
Each SMS costs Sh25.

Online Portal
Results are also accessible through the official KNEC results portal.

To check results online:

  1. Visit the KNEC Results Portal.
  2. Enter your index number.
  3. Select the examination year (2025).
  4. Click “Submit” to view and print the provisional results slip.

KNEC said the portal has been optimised to manage heavy traffic and includes security features to prevent unauthorised access.

In addition, schools will receive hard-copy result printouts and official result slips. Candidates experiencing delays online have been advised to collect their results directly from their respective schools.

The Ministry of Education cautioned candidates and parents against fake websites and misinformation circulating on social media.

“Do not fall for fake links or social media claims. The only legitimate platform for accessing KCSE results is the KNEC portal,” CS Ogamba said earlier this week.

Understanding Symbols on KCSE Result Slips

KNEC has also clarified the meaning of symbols that may appear on result slips:

  • X – Indicates absence from one or more examination papers.
  • Y – Shows cancellation of results in one or more subjects due to examination irregularities.
  • P – Means the results have been pended, often due to discrepancies in registration details.
  • W – Indicates results have been withheld pending investigations into suspected malpractice.
  • U – Stands for ungraded, meaning the candidate sat the exam but did not meet grading requirements.

What to Do If There Is an Error

Candidates have been urged to carefully review their result slips once downloaded.

They should first confirm personal details such as name, index number and school code. Subject entries and grades should also be checked to ensure accuracy.

Any errors — including missing subjects, incorrect grades or blank fields — should be reported immediately to the school principal or examination officer.

Schools will submit correction requests to KNEC through the Query Management Information System (QMIS), supported by relevant documentation.

Candidates are advised to follow up regularly until the issue is resolved.
