MOMBASA, Kenya – Kenya has taken a major step toward establishing itself as the premier cruise tourism hub in the Indian Ocean with the arrival of the Azamara Journey at the Port of Mombasa, carrying 690 international passengers.
The visit marks the third significant cruise ship call of the 2025/26 season, following successful port visits by the SH Diana and Crystal Symphony.
Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano said the arrival demonstrates the strong growth of Kenya’s cruise tourism sector and underscores the government’s ongoing efforts to diversify the country’s tourism offerings beyond its iconic wildlife safaris.
“Today, we are thrilled to welcome the Azamara Journey and her passengers to Mombasa. This milestone highlights Kenya’s emergence as a premier cruise destination,” Miano said.

Cruise tourism has become a key contributor to Kenya’s blue economy, providing economic benefits to coastal communities and the national economy.
In 2024, the country recorded a remarkable 140% increase in arrivals by sea, fueling a record-breaking tourism sector that injected Sh452.2 billion into the economy.
Miano emphasized that strategic investments in infrastructure and policy reforms have been crucial to this growth.
The modern cruise terminal at the Port of Mombasa, combined with the streamlined Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system, has made it easier for international visitors to explore Kenya by sea.
“Improved port facilities and efficient travel processes are opening the door for the world to discover Kenya’s Indian Ocean coastline,” she added.
The Cabinet Secretary also highlighted the positive impact of cruise tourism on local businesses, including tour operators, artisans, transport providers, and hotels, while promoting cultural exchange and showcasing Kenya’s rich coastal heritage.
As more cruise liners include Mombasa in their itineraries, Kenya is set to gain increased visibility as a diverse, competitive, and sustainable tourism destination.
“A warm welcome to all our guests. Kenya is truly the Origin of Wonder,” Miano concluded.
