NAIROBI, Kenya- The government has integrated a new specialised policing arm into its law enforcement architecture, aimed at enhancing the security environment in local administrative units.
The National Government Administration Police Unit (NGAPU) was gazetted on 9 February 2026, following a notice by Inspector-General Douglas Kanja under amendments to the National Police Service Standing Orders.
The unit, established under Section 10(h) of the National Police Service Act, is mandated to support National Government Administrative Officers as they execute their lawful duties.
The gazette sets out a clear command structure for NGAPU, with leadership under a Commandant who reports to the Deputy Inspector-General of the Administration Police Service.
Operational officers will be deployed at regional, county, sub-county and ward levels to ensure timely support for administrative functions nationwide.
NGAPU’s responsibilities extend beyond providing protective security for government officials.
Officers will support the enforcement of national policies and regulations, facilitate coordinated responses with other security formations, and serve as first responders during public activities.
Their role also includes supporting conflict management and community peacebuilding efforts.
The gazettement emphasises that NGAPU officers are to offer assistance without undue delay when called upon by administrative officers, especially during national functions or lawful activities.
The operational duties and any arrests made must be recorded in official logs and handed over to local police station command for follow-up.
The establishment of NGAPU highlights the government’s commitment to enhancing security support at the grassroots level and improving the coordination between administration and policing in Kenya.
“The formal gazettement of the National Government Administration Police Unit (NGAPU) reinforces grassroots security by supporting Chiefs and Assistant Chiefs, enforcing government policies and providing security at public functions,” Interior Principal Secretary Dr Raymond Omollo said.
“This move underscores the Ministry’s continued commitment to strengthening community-level security while enhancing coordination and delivery of government services at the local level.”
