NAIROBI, Kenya – Kenya is set for another spell of widespread rainfall over the next five days, with the Kenya Meteorological Department warning of wet conditions, thunderstorms and fluctuating temperatures across several regions.
In an advisory issued Friday, November 14, the Met Department said intermittent showers would affect counties in the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, Western Kenya, the Rift Valley, and the Lake Victoria basin.
Some areas will experience sunny intervals, but moderate to heavy rainfall is expected to dominate through Tuesday.
Regions to Expect Rains
Counties in the Highland East — including Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi and Nairobi — are expected to receive consistent rainfall beginning mid-morning, followed by breaks of sunshine and renewed showers in the afternoon and evening.
A similar rain pattern is forecast across the Rift Valley and Lake Victoria basin covering Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, West Pokot, and Elgeyo Marakwet.
The Met Department projects heavier downpours and possible thunderstorms in these western and Rift Valley counties, with most rain falling in the afternoon and persisting into the night.
Light showers are also expected in the South-eastern lowlands including Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, Taita Taveta, and inland Tana River.
Temperature Shift: Cold Nights, Hot Coast
The advisory also warns of significant temperature variations.
Counties in the Highland East — among them Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi and Nairobi — will see nighttime temperatures drop sharply to lows of 5°C, intensifying the ongoing cold spell.
Meanwhile, coastal counties such as Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale and parts of Tana River will experience rising temperatures, with daytime highs reaching 33°C.
Daytime temperatures of up to 30°C are expected in the Lake Victoria basin and Rift Valley counties, including Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok and Kericho.
The Met Department is advising residents in affected regions to prepare for changing weather patterns, possible flooding in high-rainfall zones, and cooler nights especially in highland counties.
