Kenya, UNFPA Renew Partnership to Boost Access to Reproductive Health Services

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – Kenya has renewed its partnership with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) to strengthen Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and improve access to sexual and reproductive health services across the country.

Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale on Tuesday hosted a high-level delegation from the UNFPA Supplies Partnership Global Steering Committee, led by Anders Thomsen, in Nairobi.

The talks focused on expanding collaboration to enhance reproductive health commodity security, streamline supply chains, and sustain domestic financing for essential health services.

Duale reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring that family planning and reproductive health services remain accessible and adequately funded.

“The Government remains committed to ensuring that family planning services are fully funded, accessible, and anchored on a rights-based approach,” said Duale. “Through the Social Health Insurance Fund and sustainable domestic financing, we are strengthening our health systems and safeguarding the health and dignity of all Kenyans.”

The Cabinet Secretary highlighted ongoing investments in the Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA) and the Integrated Family Planning Logistics Management Information System (ILMIS), which improve transparency and traceability of reproductive health commodities across counties.

Kenya and UNFPA have been working under the Compact Agreement, a collaborative framework that promotes accountability, transparency, and domestic resource mobilization for family planning and reproductive health commodities.

The country’s consistent funding for reproductive health programs and progressive budget allocations have earned it recognition as a regional leader in reproductive health and family planning.

UNFPA’s Anders Thomsen praised Kenya’s leadership, saying its partnership model had become a reference point for other African nations.

“Kenya has demonstrated exceptional stewardship and ownership in reproductive health programming. The world looks to Kenya as an example of how national commitment and global partnerships can transform health outcomes,” he said.

Duale noted that the government’s long-term goal is to strengthen national health systems through robust financing and good governance under the newly established Social Health Authority (SHA).

The authority is designed to close equity gaps and guarantee healthcare access for vulnerable and underserved populations.

“Universal Health Coverage must be inclusive and equitable. No Kenyan should be left behind when it comes to accessing quality reproductive health services,” Duale added.

Both parties pledged to deepen collaboration in sustainable health financing, secure supply chains, and reproductive health programming as part of efforts to achieve UHC and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
