Ruto, US Deputy Secretary of State Hold Talks on Terrorism and Regional Security

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — President William Ruto has held talks with United States Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau at State House, Nairobi, with counterterrorism cooperation and regional security emerging as key areas of focus.

Landau is on a two-day official visit to Kenya, during which the two leaders discussed bilateral and regional issues, including efforts to combat terrorism and violent extremism in the Horn of Africa.

President Ruto said Kenya and the United States reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation in addressing security threats, particularly in Somalia, where extremist violence has persisted for more than two decades.

“Landau underscored the need to reassess strategies employed in Somalia after more than 20 years of these challenges, and how best to support Somalia,” President Ruto said.

According to the President, the US delegation underscored the need to reassess existing counterterrorism strategies in Somalia and explore more effective ways of supporting the country in stabilising its security situation.

The leaders also reviewed Kenya–US cooperation in regional and global peace efforts, including the transition of the Kenyan-led Multinational Security Support mission in Haiti into a more robust gang suppression force.

President Ruto thanked the US government for its continued support, including the provision of equipment and vehicles.
