NAIROBI, KENYA- Kikuyu Member of Parliament and National Assembly representative Kimani Ichung’wah has urged for responsible regulation of social media platforms, citing concerns over moral erosion and decency among users, particularly children.
Speaking on the need for oversight, Ichung’wah emphasized that the call for regulation does not involve banning platforms like TikTok, which he acknowledged are providing economic opportunities for thousands of Kenyan youth.
“What we seek is balance — to protect our children, protect our values, and protect our people, while preserving the digital economy that is transforming lives,” he said.
The moral pervasion and erosion of decency on social media platforms, including TikTok, calls for responsible regulation to protect our children. This is also about safeguarding the data and privacy of our people. No one is banning TikTok or any other social media platform.
He also highlighted the importance of safeguarding data and the privacy of Kenyan citizens as part of broader efforts to ensure safe online spaces without undermining digital innovation.
