Tension High in Kisii as Armed Men Patrol Ahead of Major Opposition Rally

Date:

KISII, Kenya- Tension is high within Kisii town ahead of a major opposition rally scheduled for Monday afternoon.

Jubilee presidential candidate Dr. Fred Matiang’i is set to host his counterparts in the opposition, led by DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua and Wiper boss Kalonzo Musyoka.

A group of about 100 men has been seen patrolling the streets of Kisii while armed with sticks.

Matiang’i and his team are in Nyamira County, where they’ve had a peaceful rally.

The planned rally in Kisii town is set to draw large crowds.

“They are saying Matiangi will not speak in Kisii,” a resident told Y News.

There has been a rise in the use of goons to disrupt political events, mostly those organised by the opposition.

Goons and police have been accused of disrupting opposition rallies with no consequences, even as the government warns of a crackdown.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has claimed that opposition leaders are using teargas to disrupt their own meetings and attract sympathy.

Documented evidence shows it is the police who have been using teargas to disperse largely peaceful opposition rallies.
