NYAHURURU, Kenya — Laikipia University has announced the death of a first-year student who succumbed to injuries following a hiking accident at Subukia View Point.

In a statement issued on Saturday, March 21, the university identified the deceased as Hillary Vulimu, a Bachelor of Arts in Communication and Media student.

The institution said Vulimu died after being struck by a rock while hiking with fellow students on Friday, March 20.

“It is with profound sorrow that Laikipia University announces the untimely passing of Hillary Vulimu… a cherished first-year student,” the statement read.

According to the university, fellow students responded swiftly after the incident, arranging his transport to Michael Nursing Home for first aid before he was referred to Nyahururu County Referral Hospital for specialised treatment.

“The hospital organised an ambulance to transfer him to Nyahururu… regrettably, he passed away while receiving treatment,” the statement added.

University officials, led by the Dean of Students, visited the hospital to coordinate arrangements and support the grieving family. The institution said it had contacted the student’s parents immediately after the incident and assured them of its support during the difficult period.

“As a community, we are devastated by this loss. We appeal to students and the entire Laikipia University community to show support and tolerance at this time of sorrow,” the statement said.

The tragedy has cast a sombre mood across the university, with students and staff urged to rally around the bereaved family and those affected by the incident.
