NAIROBI, Kenya – The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has raised concerns over the unexplained transfer of activist and software developer Rose Njeri, who was arrested last week in connection with a digital tool she created to enable public engagement with the Finance Bill 2025.
Speaking outside Pangani Police Station on Tuesday morning, LSK President Faith Odhiambo said a legal team had arrived shortly after 7:30 a.m. on June 3, only to be informed that Njeri had been moved moments earlier.
“We arrived here early in the morning, just a few minutes past 7:30, and were told that she had just been picked up,” said Odhiambo. “We are now trying to find out where she has been taken and in which court she may be arraigned.”
Odhiambo added that Njeri’s lawyer, identified only as Sam, had been present throughout her detention and was preparing for a court appearance when the sudden transfer occurred. “We urge all advocates to remain alert. If she is brought before any court, notify us immediately so we can ensure she is represented.”
Njeri was arrested on Friday, May 30, reportedly over a digital platform she developed to promote public participation in the contentious Finance Bill 2025.
Her arrest has drawn sharp criticism from civil society groups, tech activists, and opposition leaders who argue her work was lawful and in the public interest.
The LSK has condemned the manner of her detention and vowed to pursue her release.
“We are watching this closely. No citizen should be penalised for exercising their constitutional rights,” Odhiambo said.
