Child Killed, Two Injured in Lorry–Motorcycle Accident in Mbeere South

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya- A three-year-old child has tragically lost her life, while her mother and a motorcycle rider are fighting for their lives following a horrific road accident involving a lorry and a motorcycle near Kiritiri Police Station in Mbeere South Sub-County.

The fatal crash occurred along the busy Kiritiri–Embu road, an area residents say has become increasingly dangerous due to heavy commercial traffic, especially lorries ferrying sand.

According to eyewitnesses, both the lorry and the motorcycle were travelling from Kiritiri towards Embu at the time of the incident.

One eyewitness, John Ngari,  said the motorcycle rider appeared to follow traffic rules as he approached the Kiritiri–Siakago junction.

“The boda boda rider slowed down and clearly indicated that he was joining the Siakago road. He was not over-speeding at all,” the witness said.

“The lorry was coming very fast from behind, and it did not seem to slow down.”

Another eyewitness, Lydia Mbuya, described the impact as sudden and violent.

“Everything happened within seconds. The lorry just rammed into the motorcycle and all of them were thrown onto the road,” Mbuya said.

“The child was badly hit. We knew immediately that she had died.”

The three-year-old child died on the spot due to the severity of the impact.

Her mother and the motorcycle rider sustained serious injuries and were rushed to different hospitals for medical attention.

Medical sources indicated that both victims remain in serious condition and are receiving intensive care.

The scene of the accident attracted a large crowd of shocked residents and motorists, with some attempting to assist the injured before police officers from Kiritiri Police Station arrived.

Traffic was temporarily disrupted as officers secured the scene and began preliminary investigations.

Residents have expressed anger and frustration over what they describe as rampant reckless driving by lorry drivers transporting sand in the area. They accuse many of the drivers of speeding, ignoring traffic signs, and showing little regard for the safety of other road users.

“This road has become very dangerous, especially for boda boda riders and pedestrians,” added Mbuya.

“These sand lorries move as if they are not carrying human lives around them.”

Members of the community are now urging authorities to take stern action against errant lorry drivers, including enforcing speed limits, increasing police patrols, and installing speed-calming measures at the Kiritiri–Siakago junction.

Some residents have also called for stricter inspections of commercial vehicles operating along the route.

Police have since launched investigations to establish the exact cause of the accident, even as the community mourns the death of the young child and prays for the recovery of the injured victims.
