Miguna Miguna Declares 2027 Presidential Bid

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — Lawyer Miguna Miguna has announced that he will contest the presidency in the 2027 General Election, setting out a campaign anchored on integrity and socialism.

Speaking on Wednesday, January 7, Miguna said his decision to seek the country’s top office is driven by a desire to fundamentally transform Kenya’s political and economic direction.

He said his vision places the interests of ordinary Kenyans at the centre of governance and development.

“I am going to contest the election for the presidency of Kenya in 2027,” Miguna said. “I am going to do it on a transformative vision that identifies the interests of the people of Kenya as the core and foundation of moving the country forward.”

Miguna said his ideology would be rooted in integrity and socialism, distancing himself from capitalist economic models that he argued have failed to deliver equity and justice.

“A vision that is built on integrity and socialism, not capitalism,” he added.

The outspoken lawyer becomes the latest political figure to publicly declare interest in the 2027 race, as early manoeuvring intensifies across the political spectrum.

In April 2025, Mumias East MP Peter Salasya also declared his intention to vie for the presidency. He said his decision followed consultations and reflection on the country’s state.

“After deep reflection, wide consultations and careful consideration of the state of our nation, I hereby declare my intention to vie for the presidency of the Republic of Kenya in the 2027 General Election,” Salasya said in a statement.

Several other prominent figures are widely seen as potential contenders. They include former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, former Chief Justice David Maraga, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka.

Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah, People’s Liberation Party leader Martha Karua, DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa and activist Boniface Mwangi have also signalled interest in the race.

Miguna’s entry adds a distinct ideological voice to the emerging field. Known for his confrontational politics and past clashes with the state, he is expected to frame his campaign around governance reforms, accountability and social justice.
