NAIROBI, Kenya — Former Cabinet Secretary for Public Service Moses Kuria has publicly expressed nostalgia for the period when Rigathi Gachagua served as Deputy President of Kenya, saying he “misses the days of Gachagua in office.”
He made the remarks during an interview on Inooro TV, saying Gachagua’s impeachment was unnecessary and ill-timed.
He described the time when Gachagua was serving in the second‑highest office as one in which the former deputy president was responsive and attentive — characteristics he said he valued.
“I miss the days when Gachagua was Deputy President because he would stop the President from doing some things,” Kuria said.
He also said Gachagua would lobby leaders from his region to push for key reforms, mostly on coffee and tea.
He said his impeachment left the Mt Kenya region with no bargaining power in government, despite the region contributing the most votes in President William Ruto’s victory.
The remarks come amid ongoing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general election.
Gachagua, who leads the Democracy for the Citizens Party, was impeached from the deputy presidency in late 2024 in a high‑profile parliamentary process that drew significant attention nationwide.
After leaving office, Gachagua has remained a visible figure in national discourse and is positioning himself as a potential candidate for higher leadership in 2027.
