Moses Kuria: Mt Kenya Not Interested in President, DP or Prime CS Seat in 2027

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya- Former Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has declared that the Mt Kenya region is not interested in contesting the country’s top three leadership positions in the 2027 General Election.

In a statement, Kuria said the region has shifted its priorities and no longer seeks to produce the President, Deputy President or Prime Cabinet Secretary.

“In this modern era when Mt Kenya do not want to be President, Deputy President or even Prime Cabinet Secretary, it is ill-advised — even dangerous — to continue using the Mt Kenya bashing card,” he said.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has previously disputed these claims, saying the region will have its own on the ballot.

“Political Software Must Be Updated”

Kuria criticised leaders who continue to use anti–Mt Kenya rhetoric as a mobilisation strategy, arguing that such tactics are outdated.

According to him, the region’s political posture has evolved from aggressively pursuing top executive seats to playing a strategic, decisive voting role.

He suggested that those attacking the region politically have “not upgraded their software,” insisting that the Mt Kenya electorate is comfortable influencing national leadership without necessarily occupying the highest offices.

Kingmaker Role in 2027

The former CS hinted that Mt Kenya voters — estimated at about seven million — could rally behind a candidate from another community in 2027.

He maintained that the region “has nothing to lose” and will calmly exercise its democratic right at the ballot without being drawn into divisive politics.

Kuria’s remarks signal a possible recalibration within one of Kenya’s most influential voting blocs, if at all factual.

Kuria is rooting for the re-election of President William Ruto of UDA and has since folded his party, CCK.

Traditionally, Mt Kenya has been central to presidential contests, often fielding or backing candidates for top executive roles.

In 2022, Ruto went with Rigathi Gachagua as a running mate, but later pushed for his removal, and gave it to a less influential Kithure Kindiki from Mt Kenya region.
