NANDI, Kenya – Aldai Member of Parliament Marianne Kitany has asked Cabinet Secretary for Public Service, Performance, and Delivery Management Justin Muturi to resign; otherwise, she will table a censure motion against him in Parliament.
Speaking during a public event at Mogomben Primary School in Kobujoi Ward, Aldai Constituency, in Nandi County, Kitany accused CS Muturi of incompetence.
“If you cannot respect the same government you are serving, you have no reason to be there. As an MP in the National Assembly, my role is oversight. I am asking you to resign, but failure will cause me to table a censure motion against you in Parliament,” Kitany said.
Kitany reacted to CS Muturi’s recent remarks, expressing dissatisfaction with President William Ruto’s administration and accusing it of doublespeak.
Addressing the press on Sunday, January 2, 2025, at a Nairobi hotel, the former attorney general accused the ruling Kenya Kwanza administration of failing to live up to principles as agreed in the run-up to the 2022 general election.
“I joined the Kenya Kwanza coalition because the principles that they espoused were in tandem with the principles of the party I belong to, namely the Democratic Party,” CS Muturi said.
Why embattled CS Justin Muturi addressed the press in Nairobi
But in a quick rejoinder, Kitany insisted that the time had come for CS Muturi to pack and leave so that he could criticise the government as an ordinary Kenyan.
“Just resign and come speak out here like any other ordinary Kenyan as you hit out at the government. But there is no way you can criticise the government when you are still serving it; that is impossible,” Kitany further said.
On Sunday, CS Muturi accused the ruling administration of failing to stop abductions and extrajudicial killings as promised on the campaign trail ahead of the 2022 polls.
“One of the things we had accused the past regimes of was the existence of disappearances and extrajudicial killings, and we vowed that we would never, under our watch, condone or allow such,” explained CS Muturi.
Without mincing his words, CS Muturi opened up about how he had suffered as his son Leslie was abducted and disappeared.
Why Marianne Kitany wants CS Justin Muturi to respect William Ruto
Kitany further observed that the Cabinet is the country’s highest decision-making organ, so it should be respected.
“The president, his deputy, the attorney general, and Cabinet secretaries sit on the Cabinet. When you were the attorney general, then how come you didn’t raise the issue of the abduction of your son and other Kenyans who have been abducted?” posed Kitany.
Kitany, a first-term MP elected on President Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA), also accused CS Muturi of disrespecting the head of state and his entire administration.
“What do you want an ordinary Kenyan to do if you can’t speak in the Cabinet? Is that not disrespecting the presidency and the Cabinet? Six months since your son was abducted and released, you haven’t reported the matter to the police. Who do you want to help you do so?” she posed.
In her own words, Kitany, who previously served as the Chief of Staff in the Office of the Deputy President, went on:
“You are the CS for Public Service, meaning even senior security officers are answerable to you, so when you come to weep your emotions through the press, yet you hold a very powerful docket, what are you still doing in that office?”
