War-Like Scenes in Nairobi After Heavy Rains Destroy Cars, Death Toll Rises to 10

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya- Scenes resembling a disaster zone unfolded in parts of Nairobi after heavy downpours triggered devastating floods that destroyed vehicles and claimed lives across the city on Friday night.

One of the worst-hit areas was the Grogan Area along Kirinyaga Road, where floodwaters swept through the garage with such force that dozens of vehicles were left damaged, piled on top of each other, or completely washed away.

Y News reporter described the aftermath as “war-like scenes,” with mangled cars scattered across the road and debris covering large sections of the area.

In some cases, vehicles were stacked against each other after being pushed by powerful currents flowing through the flooded streets.

City residents are still coming to terms with the aftermath of the floods, even as the weatherman warns of more rainfall in the coming hours.

Authorities say the death toll has risen to 10, with some victims reported to have died from electrocution after coming into contact with live electrical wires during the flooding.

Similar scenes of destruction have been reported in other parts of Nairobi, where heavy rains overwhelmed drainage systems, turning streets into raging rivers and trapping motorists.

All major roads leading to Nairobi City were affected.

Residents in affected neighbourhoods recounted moments of panic as floodwaters rose rapidly, forcing some drivers to abandon their vehicles while others watched helplessly as cars were swept away.

Emergency services and county officials have since urged the public to exercise caution during the ongoing rainy season, warning residents to avoid flooded roads and areas with exposed electrical infrastructure.

Authorities are continuing rescue and recovery operations as the city assesses the full scale of damage caused by the intense rainfall.
