Heavy rains that have been pounding parts of Nairobi over the past few days have caused significant flooding in the capital, turning major streets into rivers of rainwater and disrupting traffic flow across the city.
According to the Kenya Meteorological Department, intense downpours associated with the ongoing rainy spell have peaked this week, with several parts of the metropolis receiving moderate to heavy rainfall.
The sustained showers have increased the risk of flash floods, particularly in areas with poor drainage systems.
Roads Turn to Rivers
In the Central Business District (CBD), heavy downpours have left key thoroughfares such as Kenyatta Avenue and surrounding streets waterlogged, forcing pedestrians to wade through muddy waters and prompting motorists to navigate slowly through flooded stretches.
Videos and images shared online depict sections of the CBD resembling shallow rivers shortly after rainfall.
Motorists on the Nairobi Expressway have also reported flooding in several spots, particularly near underpasses and low-lying sections of the highway, leading to slowed traffic and travel delays during peak hours.
Routes connecting to the Expressway, including parts of Thika Superhighway, have seen water accumulation, prompting caution among drivers.
Safety Alerts and Warnings
The heavy rains have prompted alerts from road authorities, including the Kenya National Highways Authority, which has advised all road users to exercise extreme caution due to slippery surfaces, poor visibility, and the potential for rapid water accumulation on roads.
Motorists are urged to slow down, maintain safe distances, avoid overtaking in downpour conditions, and refrain from driving through flooded sections where currents appear strong or water depth is unclear.
City officials and emergency services continue to monitor the situation as the rainy spell persists, with authorities emphasising the need for drivers and pedestrians to stay alert and prioritise safety until the downpours ease later in the week.
Residents are also reminded to follow official updates from the Kenya Met and road safety authorities, and to avoid unnecessary travel during peak rainfall intensities to reduce risks associated with flooding.
