Heavy Rains to Persist in Nairobi; Flash Floods, Travel Disruption Expected

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya- The Kenya Meteorological Department has warned that moderate to heavy rains will continue across the Nairobi Metropolitan Region through March 9 at 7 pm, increasing the risk of flash floods, rising rivers, and transport disruptions.

Soils across the region remain saturated after days of torrential showers, meaning even moderate falls can trigger dangerous run‑off and flooding.

Several parts of the capital have already experienced severe flooding in recent days, with floods killing at least 23 people, damaging cars and disrupting flights at Nairobi’s main airport.

Most highways within Nairobi were affected by the floods.

Forecast Highlights (24‑hr Outlook)

  • Nairobi County: Expect widespread moderate to heavy showers, with 20–60 mm common, and isolated intense pockets reaching 80–100 mm—especially in Kibra, Dagoretti North/South, Embakasi, Makadara, Kamukunji, Roysambu, Westlands, Lang’ata and Mathare.
  • Kajiado County: 40–100 mm in parts of Kajiado North, West and Central—flood risk elevated near Nairobi borders.
  • Kiambu County: 40–80+ mm expected around Gatundu, Thika, Juja, Ruiru, Limuru, Kikuyu, Githunguri and Kabete, with landslide risk on steep slopes.
  • Machakos County: Heavy falls up to 80+ mm in Masinga, Mavoko, Kathiani, Machakos Town, Matungulu, Yatta and Kangundo—flash floods likely near rivers and lowlands.

Risks & Precautions

  • Flash and urban flooding in low‑lying zones
  • Slippery roads and poor visibility for motorists
  • Rising rivers and possible mudslides in hilly terrain

Officials say floodwaters can appear even in places where it hasn’t rained heavily, especially downstream of high rainfall zones.

Safety Tips

  • Turn around, don’t drown – avoid flooded roads
  • Stay off steep slopes during heavy downpours
  • Treat or boil drinking water
  •  Stay indoors during thunderstorms

Authorities have urged residents to follow official updates only, stay alert and report emergencies promptly as the situation evolves, noting that poor drainage and rising rivers could continue disrupting daily life.
