NAIROBI, Kenya — President William Ruto has given Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen a 60‑day deadline to design a comprehensive framework for a Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit, aimed at bolstering safety in the capital city for residents, visitors and investors.
President Ruto said the move is part of a broader plan to make Nairobi more secure and more attractive as an economic hub.
“We will make Nairobi safe for citizens, visitors and investors,” the President said, noting that the cooperation between national and county governments on security “is not beginning today,” but that his administration is now amplifying what was already started” with a sharpened focus on visible impact.
He was speaking in the State House, Nairobi, during the signing ceremony of a cooperation agreement with Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja.
The President announced a Sh80 billion development plan.
Emphasising the strategic importance of security to Kenya’s capital, Ruto said that the first impression international visitors form about Kenya is rooted in their experience in Nairobi.
He underlined that a dedicated metropolitan police structure would strengthen urban security, enhance rapid response, and reduce crime in the city’s sprawling metropolitan area.
“There comes a time when we must pull together. This is not an occasion for us to throw titles. It is the time when we should hold hands together so that we can take charge of our city,” Ruto said in his address.
As part of the security reforms announced on Tuesday, the President highlighted a Sh80 billion investment package, describing it as a multi‑sectoral initiative “to deliver measurable impact for all,” and insisted that the proposed measures are both “correct” and “right for us to do.”
