NAKURU, Kenya, Jan 19 — At least seven people have died and 11 others injured in a road accident near Kariandusi along the Nairobi–Nakuru highway, authorities confirmed on Monday.
The crash occurred when a Nakuru-bound truck lost control, colliding with two public service vehicles before ploughing into a 14-seater matatu.
Several passengers were killed on the spot, while others were rushed to the hospital in critical condition.
Police told Y News that the final casualty count is yet to be confirmed.
Witnesses described the section of the road where the accident occurred as narrow and often congested, with vehicles parked along the shoulders, increasing the risk of collisions.
“The road here is quite narrow and we also have vehicles parked on the shoulders, which makes the situation even worse,” a resident told Y News.
The accident adds to growing concern over road safety in Kenya.
The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has reported a spike in crashes, particularly during the 2025 December festive travel season, and has previously suspended four PSV firms over safety violations.
The Nairobi–Nakuru highway, one of Kenya’s busiest corridors, has seen frequent fatal accidents in recent years.
Causes often cited include reckless driving, speeding, and poor adherence to traffic regulations.
Authorities have urged drivers to exercise caution, adhere to speed limits, and avoid obstructing road shoulders, particularly on busy highways prone to congestion.
