Usalama Wetu: Kenya’s New Platform to Counter Violent Extremism

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — The National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC) has soft-launched a new national e-learning platform aimed at equipping citizens with knowledge and skills to help prevent violent extremism across the country.

The platform, dubbed Usalama Wetu, is a free digital learning hub designed for a wide range of users, including teachers, journalists, youth leaders, community organizers, and public servants.

Officials say the initiative forms part of Kenya’s broader Prevention and Countering Violent Extremism (PCVE) efforts, which focus on building resilient communities capable of identifying and addressing early warning signs of radicalisation.

According to NCTC, the platform provides self-paced courses, expert-led training modules, and certification opportunities, allowing participants to learn at their own pace while gaining practical knowledge on preventing extremism.

The digital hub was developed to support the implementation of Kenya’s National PCVE Strategy, which emphasizes community engagement, awareness creation, and capacity building as key pillars in combating radicalisation.

“Preventing extremism starts with knowledge,” the centre said in announcing the launch, encouraging Kenyans from different sectors to enroll and take part in the courses.

Security experts have increasingly highlighted the importance of community-based approaches in tackling extremism, arguing that empowering citizens with information and practical tools can significantly strengthen national security efforts.

The launch of Usalama Wetu also reflects a growing shift toward digital training platforms that make learning accessible across the country, especially for individuals who may not be able to attend physical workshops or seminars.

NCTC has invited interested participants to register for the first set of courses through the platform’s official portal via usalamawetu.nctc.go.ke.

Authorities say the program is expected to play a crucial role in strengthening awareness, promoting dialogue and supporting long-term peace-building efforts across Kenya.
