One Dead, 30 Injured After Bus Ploughs Into Crowd in Ngara, Nairobi

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya- At least one person has died and about 30 others sustained injuries after a bus lost control and crashed into a group of pedestrians in Ngara, Nairobi.

Police confirmed the fatality occurred at the scene, and many of the injured were reportedly teachers.

Witnesses said the accident happened around 5 pm outside Nairobi City Primary School, where teachers had gathered.

According to eyewitness accounts, the teachers were standing in line outside the school as voting continued indoors when a Githurai-bound PSV minibus veered off course and struck the crowd.

“One person was lying on the ground as rescue operations were underway,” said one bystander.

The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals, with some in critical condition. Authorities have warned that the casualty figures could rise due to the severity of the injuries.

Police investigations suggest that the driver lost control of the vehicle before hitting the group.

The incident highlights the ongoing challenge of road safety in the country, where traffic accidents continue to claim lives despite ongoing public awareness campaigns.

In the past month alone, road crashes have killed over 300 people and left dozens more with serious injuries.

Authorities point to reckless driving, speeding, and alcohol consumption as major contributors, alongside vehicle faults such as worn-out tyres and defective brakes.

Poor road infrastructure, including potholes, confusing signage, and insufficient lighting, further increases the risk of accidents, making pedestrian safety a growing concern across Nairobi and other urban centers.

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) continues to urge drivers and public service vehicle operators to exercise caution and ensure vehicles are properly maintained, in a bid to reduce the high number of preventable road accidents nationwide.
