WASHINGTON, United States — Former U.S. President Barack Obama has paid tribute to the late, former FBI Director Robert S. Mueller III, praising his leadership, integrity, and commitment to the rule of law.
In a statement posted on social media, Obama described Mueller as one of the most respected public servants in the United States, crediting him with transforming the Federal Bureau of Investigation in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks.
“Bob Mueller was one of the finest directors in the history of the FBI, transforming the bureau after 9/11 and saving countless lives,” Obama said.
He added that Mueller’s legacy extended beyond national security reforms, highlighting his dedication to democratic values and legal accountability.

“But it was his relentless commitment to the rule of law and his unwavering belief in our bedrock values that made him one of the most respected public servants of our time,” Obama said.
Obama also conveyed condolences on behalf of his family. “Michelle and I send our condolences to Bob’s family, and everyone who knew and admired him,” he wrote.
Mueller served as FBI director from 2001 to 2013, overseeing the bureau during a period marked by sweeping counterterrorism reforms following the September 11 attacks.
His tenure included restructuring intelligence operations, expanding inter-agency coordination, and strengthening domestic security capabilities.
He later returned to public service as special counsel in 2017, leading a high-profile investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election.
The inquiry examined links between Russian actors and political campaigns, reinforcing Mueller’s reputation for independence and adherence to legal process.
Obama’s tribute adds to growing recognition from political leaders and public officials who have credited Mueller with strengthening institutional accountability and professionalism within federal law enforcement.
The message emphasized Mueller’s long-standing reputation for integrity and public duty, with Obama noting that his contribution to safeguarding democratic institutions would remain part of his enduring legacy.
