MOMBASA, Kenya – The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has confirmed Siaya Senator Dr. Oburu Oginga as its new party leader, officially succeeding his late brother, Raila Odinga.
The announcement was made on Thursday following a special sitting of the ODM National Governing Council (NGC) in Mombasa, ahead of the party’s 20th anniversary celebrations this weekend.
According to a statement released after the meeting, the NGC ratified several key appointments to steer the party into its next phase, marking a major transition following Raila’s death last month.
Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir, Kisii Governor Simba Arati, and Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi were also approved as the party’s three Deputy Party Leaders.
Kisumu Woman Representative Ruth Odinga and Kisumu West MP Rosa Buyu were confirmed as Deputy Organising Secretary and Secretary of Political Affairs, respectively.
Oburu, who had been serving in an acting capacity since October 16 following a resolution by the National Executive Council (NEC), will now formally assume office once the appointments are ratified by the National Delegates Convention (NDC).
The party’s 20th anniversary celebrations were initially scheduled for last month but were postponed to allow Raila to travel to India for medical treatment.
Following his passing, ODM resolved to proceed with the Mombasa event as a tribute to the veteran opposition leader’s enduring legacy.
The NGC’s meeting marks the beginning of a new era for ODM, as the party seeks to consolidate its leadership structure and chart its direction in Kenya’s evolving political landscape.
