NAIROBI, Kenya — ODM has kicked off an aggressive grassroots mobilisation campaign as it seeks to protect its political influence ahead of the 2027 power-sharing talks with UDA.
The party has begun its push in Western Kenya, starting in Busia and now moving into Kakamega, with senior leaders leading the outreach. ODM boss Oburu Oginga emphasized that the party intends to negotiate from a position of strength.
“ODM is the largest party in Kenya. We go to the table not for peanuts but for what we rightfully deserve,” Oburu said.
Among the positions ODM is specifically targeting is the Deputy President’s office, though discussions are ongoing about constitutional amendments that could create additional roles, including Prime Minister and Official Opposition Leader, to accommodate power-sharing arrangements.

The DP’s position is currently being held by Kithure Kindiki, who replaced Rigathi Gachagua after he was impeached.
Gachagua was elected in a joint ticket with President Ruto.
Oburu noted that a team of tough negotiators will be appointed to represent ODM at the negotiations, highlighting the party’s determination to ensure its influence is not diminished.
The push comes as UDA, led by President William Ruto, prepares for coalition talks and seeks to consolidate its own support ahead of the 2027 elections.

Political analysts say the Western Kenya mobilisation is significant because it demonstrates ODM’s intent to solidify its grassroots base and ensure that it enters negotiations from a position of bargaining power.
Observers note that the upcoming talks could shape the political landscape ahead of 2027.
There are expected to be political casualties in both UDA and ODM.
