NAIROBI, Kenya — Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary General Edwin Sifuna has issued a formal apology to former President Uhuru Kenyatta, following political attacks by some ODM leaders, including Junet Mohamed, Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi, and Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga.
The leaders have accused the former President of trying to buy ODM, so that it doesn’t support President William Ruto’s re-election bid in 2027.
Sifuna said the attacks were unfair and did not reflect the respect owed to Kenyatta, given his historical role in supporting ODM’s leadership, particularly Raila Odinga.
“Uhuru Kenyatta, I plead for forgiveness for the kind of insults you are receiving from ODM leaders, who have forgotten what you did to help Raila Odinga. You held his hand. You were a true leader of Raila Odinga,” Sifuna said.
The apology marks a rare public acknowledgement by ODM of internal disagreements spilling into personal attacks on the former President.

Sifuna urged party members to maintain respectful discourse and focus on collective party goals rather than engaging in divisive rhetoric.
He also warned against secret meetings and deals that bypass party structures, emphasizing the importance of internal democracy and consultation in all major decisions.
“No decision will be taken without consulting all members of ODM,” he said, underscoring the need for party unity and collective decision-making.
