NAIROBI, Kenya — The National Police Service (NPS) has urged officers to formally nominate beneficiaries under the staff Group Life Insurance Scheme to ensure their families can access benefits without delays in the event of death.
In a statement, the Service said ongoing nationwide sensitisation programmes are helping officers understand the benefits and procedures of the insurance cover provided through Britam Holdings Plc.
The programme targets personnel from both the National Police Service and the Kenya Prisons Service, with forums conducted in several regions, including Nairobi, Embu, Mwingi, Mombasa, Nanyuki, Mount Elgon, and Chepchoina in Trans Nzoia County.
During the sessions, officers have been engaging directly with NPS and Britam officials to seek clarification on how the scheme operates and how they can benefit from it.
A key focus of the sensitisation campaign is the nomination of beneficiaries, which allows officers to indicate the individuals who should receive life insurance payouts in the event of their death.
According to the Service, properly completed nomination forms ensure that death-in-service benefits and other life insurance payments are processed smoothly and paid to the rightful dependants without legal disputes or administrative delays.
Officers are also being guided on how to correctly complete nomination forms and submit them through their respective human resource channels for official documentation.
The police service emphasised that officers should regularly update their beneficiary details to reflect any changes in family circumstances, such as marriage, divorce, or the birth of children.
“Beneficiary nomination is a crucial step in safeguarding the financial future of officers’ families,” the Service said, encouraging personnel who have not yet submitted or updated their details to do so during the ongoing sensitisation forums.
The programme forms part of broader efforts by the National Police Service to strengthen the welfare and social protection of its personnel, particularly those serving in high-risk environments.
Authorities say improved awareness of insurance benefits is essential to ensuring that officers and their families fully benefit from the support structures put in place for their well-being.
The Service reiterated its commitment to ensuring that every officer understands the scheme and can access the financial protection provided under the life insurance programme.
