NAIROBI, Kenya — Police officers have been deployed across Nairobi’s Central Business District to manage traffic disruption caused by the ongoing matatu strike, which has brought public transport in the city centre to a near standstill.
Officers were seen on Monday morning directing traffic, largely made up of private vehicles, along key routes including Haile Selassie Avenue and around the Railways Bus Terminus.
The heavy police presence follows widespread disruption triggered by sections of public service vehicle (PSV) operators continuing with protest action despite calls to suspend the strike.
Most matatus have stayed off the roads within the CBD, forcing commuters to walk long distances or seek alternative transport.
Businesses, workers, and students reported delays as congestion built up on surrounding roads due to reduced public transport options and rerouted traffic.
Authorities said the deployment aims to ease congestion, maintain order, and ensure access to critical areas as the situation evolves.
Motorists were advised to avoid the CBD where possible and allow extra travel time.
The developments come amid broader traffic paralysis across major Nairobi highways, including Outering Road, Thika Road, and Waiyaki Way, where isolated blockades and reduced matatu operations have compounded commuter woes.
