Severe Flooding Hits Ahero as River Nyando Bursts Banks

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — Severe flooding has hit Ahero Trading Centre after River Nyando burst its banks, submerging homes, farms, businesses and key access roads.

According to updates from the Kenya Coast Guard Service, water levels have risen above a nearby bridge and are spilling over, posing serious danger to motorists and pedestrians.

The flooding has also triggered a major traffic snarl-up along the Ahero–Kisumu road, with vehicles stranded as sections become impassable.

Emergency response teams, including the Kenya Red Cross Society and Kisumu County disaster management units, have been deployed to the area and are actively monitoring the situation while coordinating rescue and relief efforts.

Authorities have urged residents and road users to exercise caution and avoid flooded sections as the situation continues to evolve.

The latest incident adds to growing concerns over flooding in low-lying areas around River Nyando, especially during periods of heavy rainfall, which often leave communities vulnerable to displacement and loss of property.
