NAIROBI, Kenya — President William Ruto on Friday conferred the Elder of the Order of the Golden Heart of Kenya (EGH) on Princess Zahra Aga Khan, recognising her leadership in advancing health, education, and social development initiatives in Kenya and beyond.
The investiture ceremony took place at the State House, Nairobi.
“I commend you, Your Highness, for your tireless commitment to improving lives through the Aga Khan Development Network,” President Ruto said.
He noted that as a board member of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), Princess Zahra carries significant policy and management responsibility across health, education, and planning and building services institutions.
“You have advanced impactful social and economic development programmes across diverse regions,” the President added.
In her acceptance remarks, Princess Zahra paid tribute to the Ismaili community’s longstanding presence in Kenya.
“The Ismaili community has been part of this country for over 100 years, contributing to society through family life, education, work, and civic engagement,” she said.
She added that AKDN has contributed to Kenya’s development by expanding access to quality healthcare, education, tourism, and economic growth.
The Elder of the Order of the Golden Heart is among Kenya’s highest civilian honours, awarded to individuals who render distinguished service to the nation.

Princess Zahra is the eldest daughter of the late Prince Karim Aga Khan IV, who led the Ismaili Muslim community for nearly 70 years until his death in February 2025. She is also the sister of Prince Rahim Aga Khan V, his father’s successor.
President Ruto previously conferred the Chief of the Order of the Golden Heart of Kenya (CGH) on Prince Rahim in August 2025 at State House, Nairobi.
Beyond her board role at AKDN, Princess Zahra serves in several senior capacities within the organisation, including as Pro-Chancellor of the Aga Khan University.
The President welcomed deeper collaboration between the government and the Aga Khan Group, particularly in flagship programmes such as the Affordable Housing Programme and the Nairobi Rivers Regeneration initiative.
“Your Highness, the people of Kenya hold you and the Imamat in profound respect. Today, we honour you not only for your leadership, but also for your friendship and partnership,” he said.
The ceremony was attended by First Lady Mama Rachel Ruto, Vice Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces Lieutenant-General John Omenda and other senior officials.
