Ruto Deploys KDF in Flood Rescue Operations Across Nairobi

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya- The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) have been deployed alongside the Ministry of Interior and other emergency agencies in a massive flood rescue and relief operation across Nairobi and other affected parts of the country, following days of relentless heavy rainfall.

President William Ruto said the ongoing flooding has caused tragic loss of life, displacement of families, and destruction of property, and directed swift action to safeguard citizens.

“The Government stands in solidarity with every citizen affected. I have ordered the immediate deployment of a multi-agency emergency response team led by the Ministry of Interior, working closely with the Kenya Defence Forces and other agencies to rescue those in danger, support affected communities, and move residents to safer locations,” President Ruto said.

The floods have affected low-lying neighborhoods and major estates, with ongoing operations by the KDF, including evacuations, debris clearance, and logistical support, in heavily waterlogged areas.

Relief food from national strategic reserves is being distributed, and the government has committed to covering hospital bills for those injured during the floods.

“The Government stands in solidarity with every citizen affected, and we are acting swiftly to alleviate further suffering and safeguard lives,” the President said.

Authorities are coordinating with Nairobi City County Government and other county administrations to ensure a unified response, while emphasizing the urgent need for long-term solutions to Nairobi’s perennial flooding.

President Ruto highlighted that the Nairobi River Regeneration Programme will be strengthened and accelerated to restore river ecosystems, improve drainage systems, and reduce future flood risks, protecting both lives and property.

Residents are urged to stay vigilant, avoid flooded roads, and follow official updates as the heavy rains continue.
