NAIROBI, Kenya — Security and emergency response teams have been deployed to Shauri Moyo estate in Nairobi after a building collapsed following an attempted demolition earlier on Monday.
According to Simon Osumba, the Nairobi North County Commissioner, the Kenya Defence Forces, Kenya Red Cross Society, and police officers were dispatched to the scene to support rescue efforts.
Osumba said two people were rescued from a collapsed wall, with one of the victims sustaining injuries.
Emergency responders are continuing with rescue operations amid fears that others could still be trapped.
Kenya Red Cross says at least 6 people are unaccounted for.
The building was among several structures located along the Nairobi River riparian corridor that had been earmarked for removal as part of an ongoing operation targeting illegal developments along protected waterways.
Authorities said the collapse occurred after an earlier demolition attempt on structures within the area.
Rescue teams remain on site, clearing debris and searching for possible victims, while security officers have cordoned off the area to allow emergency operations to continue without interference.
Officials say further updates will be provided as rescue efforts progress.
