KITENGELA, Kenya — Police fired tear gas during a political gathering in Kitengela on Sunday as thousands of supporters attended a high‑profile rally led by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and Siaya Governor James Orengo under the banner of the Linda Mwananchi Tour.
The rally, which drew large crowds chanting slogans including “Ruto Must Go”, was organised amid simmering tensions within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) following internal leadership disputes.
“Why do they want to destroy our meeting?” Sifuna posed, as a section of the crowd scampered for safety.

Rally Highlights Political Divide
The rally — the first major political engagement since Sifuna’s contested removal as ODM Secretary General — was marked by rousing speeches from opposition leaders.
Sifuna told the crowd he would not be deterred by political challenges and vowed to keep speaking out against what he called “corruption and weak leadership” under President William Ruto.
“We will not fear anything,” Sifuna declared as cheers erupted from the crowd.
“We will continue to speak the truth so that we protect the citizens… even if they do away with Sifuna, more than 15 million Sifunas will continue with this mission.”
Orengo echoed calls for unity and urged supporters to hold firm to the party’s principles amid internal disagreement.
