NAIROBI, Kenya — Six suspects are in custody following a coordinated security operation targeting violent criminal gangs in the Coast region, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has announced.
Acting on intelligence, detectives conducted targeted operations across Mombasa, Kilifi and Kwale counties as part of a major offensive against gang members linked to a spate of violent attacks and community disruption attributed to the so‑called “panga boys.”
The operation led to the arrest of six individuals identified as:
- Nicholas Mumba Chisiwa
- Haniff Iqbal Sharbaz
- Salim Mafuko Hamis
- Ali Musa Mwachimwandi
- Sadik Hamis Mwanzembe
- Samuel Gitonga
During the arrests, security officers recovered assorted crude weapons and narcotic substances, reflecting patterns described in earlier intelligence assessments that linked the suspects and their networks to both violent intimidation and drug‑related activities.
In a statement, the DCI confirmed that the recoveries support investigations into multiple incidents across the Coast that have unsettled local communities in recent weeks.
The seizure of crude weapons alongside illicit drugs underscores the compound threat posed by organised criminal elements to public order and safety.
“All suspects are currently undergoing processing as detectives advance investigations into multiple related incidents that remain under active review,” the statement read, noting that further action may be taken as evidence is analysed and charges are prepared.
Security agencies said they remain on heightened alert and will continue to pursue remaining members and facilitators of the criminal cells to ensure sustained security across the coastal region.
The operation forms part of a wider effort by national and regional security teams to dismantle criminal networks that have been associated with an increase in violent robberies, community intimidation and drug distribution activities — concerns that have been raised by local leaders and residents alike.
Authorities urged the public to continue reporting suspicious activity to the nearest police station or through official hotlines as the crackdown intensifies and investigations continue.
