NAIROBI, Kenya – January 27, 2026: The Supreme Court of Kenya will observe its annual Easter recess from Thursday, March 26, 2026, to Wednesday, April 8, 2026, Chief Justice and Supreme Court President Martha Koome has announced.
In a formal notice issued on Monday, CJ Koome stated that the break is in accordance with the Constitution of Kenya, the Supreme Court Act, 2011, and the Supreme Court Rules, 2020.
The recess provides the apex court an opportunity to pause regular sittings while ensuring mechanisms are in place to address urgent judicial matters.
“The Supreme Court Easter recess will commence on Thursday, March 26, 2026, and terminate on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, both days inclusive,” the notice reads.
Despite the recess, the Chief Justice emphasized that essential judicial services will continue. A duty Judge will be on standby to handle urgent and time-sensitive cases that may arise during this period.
“The duty Judge will be available during recess to deal with urgent matters,” CJ Koome said, reaffirming the court’s commitment to access to justice even during scheduled breaks.
The Supreme Court Registry will remain operational on all weekdays, excluding public holidays, from 8:30 am to 5 pm, ensuring that administrative functions such as filing urgent documents and public inquiries continue without interruption.
The Easter recess is a routine feature of the judicial calendar, allowing judges and staff time for rest while maintaining continuity of critical services.
CJ Koome highlighted the importance of balancing institutional efficiency with the constitutional obligation to provide timely justice.
“The court remains open to the public through the registry and stands ready to address urgent issues in the interest of justice,” she said.
Normal court operations are expected to resume immediately after the recess ends on April 8, 2026.
