MOMBASA, Kenya- Former President Uhuru Kenyatta joined Catholic faithful at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Nyali, Mombasa, on Wednesday morning to mark Ash Wednesday, the start of the 40-day Lenten period leading up to Easter.
During the solemn service, Kenyatta participated alongside congregants in traditional prayers and rituals symbolizing repentance and spiritual reflection.
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of a period of fasting, prayer, and introspection in the Christian calendar.
In a message of goodwill, the former President extended warm wishes to Christians embarking on their Lenten journey, expressing hope that the season would be filled with reflection, prayer, and acts of compassion.

Kenyatta also acknowledged Kenya’s Muslim community, wishing them a blessed Ramadan.
He highlighted that both Lent and Ramadan share common values of faith, discipline, charity, and community cohesion.
“May this Lenten season strengthen your faith and commitment to acts of compassion and reflection. I also wish our Muslim brothers and sisters a blessed Ramadan, a time to deepen faith and foster unity across communities,” the former President said.
His participation and outreach to different religious groups underscored Kenya’s long-standing tradition of religious harmony and coexistence, emphasizing shared moral and spiritual values across faiths.
