NAIROBI, Kenya- Former President Uhuru Kenyatta is among leaders attending the burial of veteran politician and former Lugari MP Cyrus Shakhalaga Khwa Jirongo on December 30 at his rural home in Lumakanda, Lugari Constituency, Kakamega County.

Jirongo, a prominent political figure whose influence spanned decades, is being laid to rest in a ceremony attended by family members, friends, community leaders and politicians from across the political divide.

The funeral service is taking place amid tight security and large crowds drawn from Lugari and neighbouring regions.

Other leaders present at the event include Musalia Mudavadi, Gideon Moi, and Moses Wetangula, among others.

Jirongo, 64, a former Member of Parliament for Lugari and influential figure in Kenyan politics, died in a road traffic accident on 13 December 2025 when the vehicle he was driving collided head-on with a passenger bus on the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway near Karai, Naivasha.

Authorities reported that Jirongo’s vehicle collided head-on with a passenger bus, causing his death.

While official accounts indicate a tragic accident, his family has publicly expressed concern, insisting that the events leading to his passing be fully clarified.

In the lead-up to Jirongo’s burial, the family hosted vigils and memorial services attended by political allies, friends, and community members.

The body was received at the family’s Kitale residence for an overnight vigil before being moved to Lugari Primary School grounds, where the funeral service will take place prior to interment at the family homestead.

Jirongo’s political career spanned decades, beginning with his role in youth mobilization in the early 1990s.

He later remained a prominent figure in national politics, known for his bold positions and business ventures. His death has prompted tributes from across the political spectrum, reflecting the wide reach of his influence.

Family members have urged authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances of the road accident, seeking clarity and accountability.
