NAIROBI, Kenya — Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has joined Kenyans and the Catholic faithful in mourning Bishop Emeritus Rt. Rev. Philip Sulumeti of the Catholic Diocese of Kakamega described him as a devoted servant of God and a pillar of faith whose life embodied humility, compassion, and service to humanity.
In a condolence message released on Monday, November 10, Kenyatta hailed the late bishop as a moral compass and peacemaker who positively influenced generations through his ministry and unwavering dedication to community upliftment.
“Bishop Sulumeti was a devoted servant of God whose life was defined by humility, compassion, and unwavering commitment to service. He touched countless lives through his ministry and steadfast dedication to uplifting communities,” Kenyatta said.
The former Head of State noted that Bishop Sulumeti’s legacy of faith, unity, and love will remain deeply etched in the hearts of those he served.
“As we mourn his passing, we also celebrate a life well lived in the service of God and His people. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations of leaders and believers,” Kenyatta added.
He extended his heartfelt condolences to the Catholic Diocese of Kakamega, the clergy, and the faithful, praying that God grants them comfort and strength during this time of loss.
Bishop Sulumeti, who passed away on Sunday night at Nairobi Hospital, served as the first bishop of Kakamega Diocese from 1978 to 2014, during which he oversaw the diocese’s tremendous growth in faith, education, and community development.
