MBALE, Vihiga County — The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has launched a formal inquiry following a mob justice incident on February 21, 2026, at a political rally in Mbale Town, Vihiga County, which left George Olande Otobe, also known as Omundu, dead.
According to preliminary investigations, Otobe allegedly stabbed a man, Hussein Hassan, in the head during an altercation, prompting bystanders to retaliate.
The ensuing mob violence resulted in Otobe suffering multiple severe head injuries, leading to his death.
A knife was recovered at the scene.
Otobe’s body was initially taken to Vihiga County Referral Hospital mortuary and later transferred to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) for preservation following a postmortem examination.
Records indicate that Otobe was a resident of Kisumu County and worked as a boda boda rider.

The DCI emphasized that the incident occurred near the Linda Mwananchi rally in Kakamega, noting that while the Constitution of Kenya guarantees the right to assemble and demonstrate peacefully, this right must be exercised unarmed.
Preliminary findings suggest that the rally organisers armed their supporters, which contributed to the escalation of violence.
“Organisers of all political rallies and public gatherings must ensure that supporters remain unarmed and proceedings are conducted peacefully. Failure to uphold this obligation endangers lives and breaches public order,” the DCI said.
The investigation also highlighted the restraint shown by officers on the ground, who prevented further escalation and potential loss of life despite the volatile circumstances.
The DCI has extended condolences to Otobe’s family and wished Hussein Hassan a speedy recovery from his injuries.
Authorities have vowed that all those found culpable, whether for the mob violence or related offences, including arming supporters, will be dealt with firmly in accordance with the law.
“No one is above the law. The DCI remains committed to upholding justice, maintaining public safety, and protecting the rights of all Kenyans,” the statement read.
