NAIROBI, Kenya — Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi has called on the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) to field a presidential candidate in the 2027 General Election, rejecting suggestions that the party should step aside and support President William Ruto.
Speaking on Monday, Osotsi emphasized that ODM remains a political powerhouse with several capable leaders ready to pursue the nation’s highest office.
Recalling a meeting with the late Raila Odinga, Osotsi said the former Prime Minister had questioned narratives suggesting the party would not have a candidate.
“Baba asked us, ‘Who told you ODM will support someone else? Who told you that in 2027 ODM won’t have a candidate?’” he said. “Now that Baba has passed, we must honor that vision.”
Osotsi dismissed claims of a leadership vacuum, pointing to himself, Siaya Governor James Orengo, and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino as potential candidates.
He also highlighted the 10-point agenda signed between Raila Odinga and President Ruto, urging the government to implement provisions on electoral justice and police accountability.
“The families of young protesters killed by police must be compensated, and officers involved prosecuted,” Osotsi said. He added that the truth regarding the last election must be made public.
The Senator further urged ODM party leader Oburu Oginga to follow Raila’s consultative approach and listen to grassroots members, warning that ignoring rank-and-file voices could destabilize the party.
He stressed the importance of a united front between the Luhya and Luo communities for ODM’s strength heading into the 2027 election.
