NAIROBI, Kenya- The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission has launched an investigation into alleged misuse of public funds after claims emerged that Sh5 million was spent on a lavish housewarming party at the residence of the Vihiga County Speaker.
The probe follows a request from the Senate Public Accounts Committee, which asked the Commission to look into financial irregularities at the county, after the Auditor-General raised queries about the misuse of public resources.
In letters dated February 12, 2026, seen by Y News, the EACC formally notified the Clerk of the Vihiga County Assembly and the Acting County Secretary of the ongoing investigation.
The Commission has asked the county government to provide original or certified copies of all documents related to the housewarming, including:
- Requests for funds from the County Assembly to facilitate the event
- Approvals for borrowing by the County Government
- Confirmation of transfers and reimbursements
- Any other relevant financial records
The correspondence, signed by Abraham Kemboi on behalf of EACC CEO Abdi Mohamud, gave the county a deadline of February 13, 2026, to submit the requested documents.
Officers Brian Shigoli and Kevin Lagat, or other authorized EACC officials, are to receive the submissions.
The investigation has heightened scrutiny of Vihiga County’s leadership and spending practices, with residents and civic groups calling for swift action to recover public funds and hold officials accountable.
The EACC probe adds to ongoing concerns about transparency and governance at the county level, underscoring the need for rigorous oversight of public finances in Kenya’s devolved units.
