NAIROBI, Kenya — A grieving Joyce Mbugua, mother of the late gospel singer Betty Bayo, delivered a deeply emotional tribute to her daughter on Sunday, portraying her as a God-fearing, generous, and gifted woman whose short life left an enduring imprint on her family and the wider gospel community.

Speaking via livestream from the United States during the memorial service held on November 16, Joyce described her youngest daughter as “a gift God confirmed to the world,” recalling how Betty’s spiritual journey began early.

She said she introduced Bayo to Christianity at a young age, noting that by age 12, the budding singer was already leading worship sessions and participating in fasting.

“Betty, you loved the Lord, and I introduced you to Him as a small girl,” she said, her voice breaking as she recounted their shared spiritual foundation.

Joyce vividly remembered the moment she realised her daughter carried a divine calling. Betty often told her she could hear songs within her. After praying together, Joyce said she felt God affirming that her daughter had been entrusted with a special gift.

That talent fully blossomed in 2009 when Bayo launched her gospel music career, rising to national prominence and inspiring many through her vocals and ministry.

Beyond the music, Joyce portrayed her daughter as an extraordinary provider whose generosity radically transformed her mother’s life.

“You took me from the village to Runda Estate. You insisted on providing for me and ensuring I lacked nothing,” she said. Even when Joyce later requested to return home, Betty continued to care for her, eventually building her a modern house and later facilitating her relocation to the United States.

“Your life may have been short, but you beautified my life more than I could ever imagine,” she added, fighting back tears.

In her tribute, Joyce addressed her grandchildren directly, offering words of comfort and affirming her continued love amid the family’s sorrow.

“You may not replace your mom’s thoughts in my heart, but when I see you, I remember the bond and love we shared. Please remember that Grandma loves you,” she said.

Her message also carried an agonising admission that revealed the depth of her grief. “No mother should ever have to go through this experience,” she said. “Yet even in pain, I say what you could have said — it is God’s will.”

The heartfelt tribute added another emotional layer to the memorial of a singer celebrated for her worship ministry and remembered for her devotion to faith, family, and service.
