NAIROBI, Kenya — The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has warned of intensified rainfall across multiple regions this week, raising concerns over potential flooding and weather-related disruptions.
In its forecast for March 17 to March 23, 2026, the agency said rainfall will be experienced in several parts of the country, with intensity expected to increase from Thursday.
Regions likely to receive heavy downpours include the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, the South-eastern Lowlands, and the Coast Region.
“Rainfall is expected over the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, the South-eastern Lowlands, and the Coast region of Kenya with increased intensity from Thursday. Isolated heavy rainfall events are also likely to occur over parts of these same regions,” the forecast stated.
The weatherman also indicated that parts of northeastern and northwestern Kenya will remain largely hot and dry, although isolated showers may occur.
Daytime temperatures exceeding 30°C are expected in the Coast, northeastern and northwestern regions, while cooler nighttime temperatures below 10°C are likely in parts of the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, the Central Rift Valley, the North Rift, and areas near Mount Kilimanjaro.
The advisory comes amid ongoing heavy rains that have already triggered flooding in parts of Nairobi.
According to the Kenya Red Cross Society, floods affected several areas across the capital, including Parklands, the central business district, Ngong Road (Ngando area), Lower Kabete, Kibera, Kilimani, South B, Kawangware, Lang’ata, Lavington, Eastleigh, and Riruta.
“Heavy rainfall has caused flooding in several parts of Nairobi,” the agency said, adding that emergency teams had been deployed to respond to incidents caused by rising water levels.
The floods disrupted transport on major roads, leaving some routes impassable and causing significant delays for motorists.
Emergency responders rescued at least 13 people who had been trapped by rising floodwaters.
Authorities are urging residents in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant as rainfall intensifies, with the risk of further flooding expected in the coming days.
