NAIROBI, Kenya – The body of one of the three men reported missing from Mlolongo, Justus Mutumwa Musyimi, has been found at the City Mortuary in Nairobi, family lawyer and Senator Dan Maanzo told the court on Thursday.
Musyimi’s body was discovered in Ruai before being transferred to the mortuary.
His family identified him on Thursday, though details surrounding his death remain unclear.
Authorities have yet to determine when he died or the cause, with an autopsy planned to establish further details.
The discovery emerged as Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja and Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Director Mohamed Amin appeared before Justice Chacha Mwita.
They denied any involvement in the disappearance of Musyimi and the two other missing men—Martin Mwau and Karani Muema—who were reportedly abducted on December 16, 2024.
Appearing in court, Kanja and Amin, represented by lawyer Paul Nyamodi, stated that the missing persons’ reports had been officially filed at Athi River’s Mlolongo Police Station.
Kanja referenced Occurrence Book (OB) numbers 23/21/12/24 and 43/25/12/2024 to confirm the reports had been recorded.
Kanja reassured the public about their safety, citing the festive season as having been peaceful.
“I want to let the people of Kenya know they are safe. We have just come from the festive season, and throughout, people enjoyed Christmas because this country is safe,” he said.
Amin also distanced the police from the disappearances, stating that none of the missing men were in custody.
“We have not arrested them, and they are not under our custody,” he told the court.
Senator Maanzo, representing the family, called for a thorough investigation into Musyimi’s death.
“A quick search on the body has confirmed it is that of the missing man Mutumwa, who is a party to the case in court. This information has come to us as the case proceeded,” he said.
State Prosecutor Mark Baraza confirmed that the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) had instructed the Inspector General to investigate the abductions and expected a report soon.
“We are aware of incidents of abduction. Following these complaints, the DPP directed the IG to investigate. The IG has institutional independence to do so, and we expect the findings in due course,” Baraza said.
